Microsoft has recently announced that it is planning on keeping the Xbox 360 as their latest next-gen console for some time, instead of developing a new console.
Microsoft’s president of entertainment and devices, Robbie Bach, said to the San Jose Mercury News: “Just coming up with something that’s faster and prettier isn’t going to be sufficient.” He continued to say: “The life cycle for this generation of consoles – and I’m not just talking about Xbox, I’d include Wii and PS3 as well – is probably going to be a little longer than previous generations,”.
Bach also explained that the economic downturn would also affect the production of a new console as the consumer is less likely going to go out and spend the several hundreds that a new console costs these days.
Microsoft is not the only company announcing that their console will be long lasting. Sony recently announced that they have a 10 year plan for the Playstation 3, meaning we could see the pair still battling it out in the far future.
That is good to see that current systems will be staying along longer. It seems like in the past by the time most people could afford the systems, they were already becoming obsolete.
I totally agree with you, especially for the price of the consoles when they come out.
Its good that the 360 will continue to be aronud for so long. It’s finally got to a price where it is affordable my most and it would be ashame for it to be obsolite in the near future. I wondered if Microsoft were going to release a newer console soon, but I guess we will have to wait for while.
