I finally got my hands on the new X-Men Origins: Wolverine game and I haven’t been able to put it down, until now obviously. The reason I only got the game today instead of on the release date was because being a movie game, sometimes they can be rather crap, so I decided that I was going to rent the game, however, when I went over to Blockbusters to get it, they told me that they were not getting it in, which was a pain. So after hearing how good it was from a friend, I decided to hand over the cash and buy it, and I am really not disappointed.
Enough of my story, onto the game. The game sort of has 2 story lines; you have the storyline of the film, hopefully I won’t spoil it for anyone that hasn’t seen the film, and then you have another storyline which took place 3 years before the film set in Africa. Throughout the game you swap from one story to the other but you maintain all your new skills and abilities.
The actual gameplay is very good, as your progress through the levels and kill enemies, you gain experience points and level up, these level ups give you skill points which allow you to improve your fighting skills. Also as you go further into the game, you learn new moves. The fighting is very amazing too, if gore is your thing then this game should certainly tick a number of your boxes, there are several ways that you can rip your enemies apart, from just hacking them to bits or impaling them on trees and random spikes that seem to stick out of the ground.
The only downside of being able to hack people to bit is that it becomes rather easy because you can simply spam a button to wipe out your enemies, and if you do take some damage, you have your health generation to make your life last that little bit longer.
Onto the graphics, the graphics of the game are reasonable, certainly better than those of the new Chronicles of Riddick: Assault on Dark Athena game. There is room for improve though, especially in the movie scenes and the environment, it looks really poor sometimes, however, there are a few really good movie scenes which have been created with CGI or something (although, they haven’t quite captured the look of Hugh Jackman as Wolverine because in the opening movie scene it looks nothing like him until you realise it must be him). As for the environment, it lacks a huge amount of detail and although there are items lying around the maps, alot of it is blocked off by invisible walls.
One upside for the graphics department is the detail on Wolverine himself, unlike the movie, his silly vest thing does fall to pieces after a while which gives you a good view of the real time healing and damage that takes place which has to be one of the best graphics features of the game.
Overall I would give this game 7/10 because the gameplay and the action of the game is very good, can’t say much about the graphics but that’s not the most important thing. There are a few bad points about the game, one being that it is quite easy and doesn’t take a huge amount of time to progress through the game, another would be that the boss/tough mutant fights are slightly repetitive and once you know how they attack it’s very simple. Another problem is that there are a few bugs here and there around the game, however, when your spinning around and throwing your enemies to the ground, they’re not very apparent. The final bad point is that once you have completed it, what you can do after is very limited, there are the fight rooms which are similar to Gears of War where you have to fight off a number of waves but there is not multiplayer as such.
