Will this be the only use for your PS3 in the future?

Robert Kotick, CEO of Activision Blizzard, has said today that he is considering a move to stop making new games for the PS3 and the PSP because the return that they make isn’t as good as other consoles like the Wii and the Xbox 360. This bit of news is yet another blow for Sony after they announced earlier in the year net losses of over $1 billion aswell as a series of job cuts.

The Activision CEO said this during an interview with The Times: “I’m getting concerned about Sony; the PlayStation 3 is losing a bit of momentum and they don’t make it easy for me to support the platform”. He continued by saying “It’s expensive to develop for the console, and the Wii and the Xbox are just selling better. Games generate a better return on invested capital on the Xbox than on the PlayStation.”

He, like many gamers, are looking for Sony to reduce the price of the PS3 in an attempt to boost sales. “They have to cut the price, because if they don’t, the attach rates are likely to slow. If we are being realistic, we might have to stop supporting Sony.” and finally when he was asked when they might stop supporting the Playstation consoles he answered: “When we look at 2010 and 2011, we might want to consider if we support the console–and the PSP.”

This all sounds like some pretty bad news for Sony. Although this announcement may trigger a price reduction, would gamers be happy spending the money on a console that may either be un-supported in the future, or the manufacturer may just go bust? Plus, with cheaper next gen console, the Xbox 360, releasing their motion sensor technology in the near future, can the PS3 really compete and survive?

Hi I'm Dan (aka Scrooby). I'm an 18 year old gamer and full time Web Developer for FreshEgg. Most of gaming tends to be on the Xbox 360 mainly because I love the achievement system. My favourite games are mainly FPS games, Halo, Gears of War and Call of Duty are particular favourites. However, I'll play pretty much all genres of games, anything from Guitar Hero 5 to Lego Harry Potter, they're all great!

  1. This could be a bit of a blow for Sony, especially as the PS3 is easily the better of the current generation of consoles.

  2. I’ll give you that comment about the PS3 being better because you are clearly shocked by this news and cannot think about what you are saying because the Xbox 360 is clearly a more superior console =P
