The Best iPad Games

Written by Scrooby on 30th July, 2010 with 7 Comments

Since it’s release back in April, the iPad has become massively popular. Selling more than 3 million units by the end of June, along with the release of the iPhone 4, the iPad has rocketed Apple’s profits. Ever since the day of release, more and more games have been released for the iPad, both new games and old classics from the iPhone which have been revamped for the larger screen.

If you were just like me and couldn’t decide which games to buy first with your hard earned cash, below are some of the best games that you can buy for the iPad right now. I should point out that the majority of these are paid games, however, they are all worth the money.

Flight Control HD

Flight Control was one of the classic games for the iPhone and it didn’t come as a shock when they released an even better version for the iPad. The game involves the player drawing the flight path for incoming planes, making sure they landed at the apropriate airport, without crashing. The iPad version of this game comes with a few extra features such as a 3D map (glasses not provided) as well as a number of multiplayer options.

At just £2.99, this game is a must have, it’s certainly proved a popular one in my family.

Real Racing HD

Just like Flight Control, Real Racing was a up their with the top games on the iPhone so buying Real Racing HD was a must have really. Built by Firemint (the same company that brought you Flight Control HD), the game uses the iPad shell as the steering wheel, allowing you to turn the car by turning your iPad and touching the screen while racing controls the brake, however, on the easiest setting, the brakes are handled for you. This latest variation of the game brings added extras such as custom car skins, extra maps and the ability to race other gamers ghost cars which you can download and share over the internet.

Costing £5.99, it’s a bit of a steep price, just about worth it though.

Angry Birds HD

I’d never played Angry Birds when it was released on the iPhone but I’m glad I did for the iPad. The larger screen and improved graphics mean that you get a better gaming experiance along with a smoother playing game. The game revolves around the story that a group of green pigs have stolen the eggs of some birds, which obviously made them angry (hence the name). To get your own back on those pigs, you have to sling shot a series of angry birds at the pigs and crush them under their surprisingly well built structures, for pigs that is.

For just £0.59, it’s definately worth playing, even if it’s just for the sound that the pigs make.

Veggie Samurai

Although the idea of this game seems a little bit odd, slicing up vegetables using a samurai sword, it’s actually a lot of fun anf slightly addictive. The game itself is quite basic, there are two modes, Samurai Mode which involves you slicing and dicing vegetables while avoiding the poison, all with limited lives. The second mode, which is my personal favourite, is Harmony Mode where you have a limited time to score as many points by getting slice and dice combos. One tip with this game is that you are not restrictred to using one finger, so you can slice and dice using more than one sword (finger).

Let’s Golf! HD

Let’s Golf! is another classic from the iPhone, however, due to the limited screen area of the iPhone, it was a bit difficult to get everything out of the game. Now, on the much large iPad, the game really comes alive. With 4 different modes to play from: Instant Play, Free Hole, Multiplayer mode and finally a Tournament mode which allows you to play across 4 countries, each with 18 holes, it’s a great game if you’ve just got 5 minutes or 5 hours.

Osmos HD

This game is fairly new to the App Store, but it certainly has gained alot of popularity, particularly with gaming sites. In the game you control a ‘mote’, surrounded by other ‘motes’. In each level you are given a task such as “Become Huge”, to fulfill this mission, you have to absorb the surrounding ‘motes’, however, you can only absorb ones that are smaller than you. To make task even harder, to be able to propel your mote through space, you need to eject some of your motes matter in the opposite direction, therefore reducing your mote size. This gives the game a strategic side as you have to absorb your surrounding motes while still growing yourself.

The reason why this game has become so popular with gaming websites is because this game not only shows off the capabilities of the iPad graphics, but it also displays impressive physics and artificial intelligence. That’s the reason why some game review sites are hailing this game as “The Best” game for the iPad.

  2. I love Veggie Samurai the most. It is a solid game with great mechanics and exciting action. For $0.99, Fruit Ninja fans can’t go wrong picking up this 4-Dimple bowl of diced cherries.

  3. I’m sorry, but Call of Duty World at War: Nazi Zombies wins my nomination for best iPhone/iPod touch/iPad game ever. They recently added the Shi No Numa map and I can’t even begin to describe how awesome it is. It’s also strangely addicting.

Although some might find the price pretty steep, I think it’s worth every penny.
Buy it. Play it. Love it.
