Ubisoft, creators of the popular Splinter Cell series, have announced today that they will be delaying the release of Splinter Cell: Conviction, along with a number of other games, until the beginning of 2010.
Along with the latest Splinter Cell game, they are also delaying Red Steel 2, now both are planned for an early 2010 release. Also, they are delaying I Am Alive and the next Ghost Recon game, however, these games are pushed back even further with possible release dates expected to be around 2011.
This news came as quite a surprise considering all the hype at this years E3, also, a new trailer was released just a week ago. Even though this news came as quite a surprise, hopefully it will give them a chance to make the game even better. However, saying that, I don’t think it’s the primary reason for delaying the games release.
The reason that’s suspected is because Ubisoft just announced their sales for the first quarter of their financial year and it showed a drop by over 50%. This has resulted in them delaying the release of these games in order to try and get more sales out of the games because with such a huge number of massive releases due for the run up to Christmas, some games will not get as many sales as required. With games like Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 being release in November, there are fears for developers and publishers that their games will be put aside to save money for bigger games.
It’s starting to look like the run up to Christmas won’t cost as much as I first calculated. With Bioshock 2 recently delayed and now Splinter Cell: Conviction, I wonder if we will see any other games being pushed back.
It’s a shame that the realease of games is affected by the economy. Oh well, I guess we’ll just have to wait then.
