Sony have just started their E3 conference and hopefully we’ll see some awesome new releases and features just like the ones from Microsoft yesterday.
The first part of their conference was slightly disappointing because all they did was talk about their sales figures and the amount of consoles they have sound in their new locations like South America.
Once this was over they moved straight onto the game releases which started with Uncharted 2: Among Thieves. This game which is exclusive to the Playstation 3 was a great hit for Sony when the original game was released. This time the game looks even better and is full of all the action that we saw in the first game, this time in even better graphics.
We were shown a short demo of the game to give a bit of a teaser of the combat that we will treated to when this game is released.
The next game up was MAG. This game was announced at last years E3 and it has become a much anticipated game simply because you will be able to play a 256 player multiplayer only on the Playstation 3. We were shown a live game that was currently under way using a series of developers and game testers from all around the world.
This game certainly seems to be a great new FPS, just slightly concerned about any lag that may occur, considering the huge amount of players, aslong as the servers can handle it, I’m sure this game will be massive.
Next up was a bit of information about the PSP and what sort of games we will be seeing which include Rock Band and Hannah Montana.
After that came a section to do with the upcoming new PSP handheld console, the PSP Go. This new PSP console has been designed for gaming on the go, hence the name, and because of this fact, it’s smaller and up to 40% lighter than the original PSP. With the PSP Go you will get a 16GB flash memory to store all the games you want onto your console, why you ask would you need 16GB memory? That would be because you don’t need disks to play your games. You will be able to download your games from the Playstation Store via wired internet or using the built in Wifi technology on the PSP Go.
The new PSP Go will be available from October this year in both North America and Europe at $249.99 and 249.99 euros.
The next game up was Gran Turismo PSP which they say is a full blown Gran Turismo game and not a cut down version, but now on the PSP for you to play on the go or at home. This new game will come with 35 racing tracks 65 layout variations for those tracks. You will also be able to play on the go with your mates by using the co-operative play which allows you to play as part of 4 players around the race tracks, aswell as being able to share your cars with your mates.
This game ended it’s announcement section with a video of what to expect from the game which looked like what they were saying was true and there has been no cut down in quality with Gran Turismo PSP compared to any other Gran Turismo game. The video ended by displaying a date, October 1st.
Next up was an announcement for a new Metal Gear Solid game for the PSP, Metal Gear Solid Peace Walker which is set 10 years after Metal Gear Solid 3 in the 1970′s. Hideo Kojima from Kojima productions announced that he will be highly involved in the production of the game and it will be a true game and not a spin off, it will also harness all of the PSP power. A trailer followed this short introduction which revealed some in-game footage aswell as a release date for 2010.
After this they had a short message about some other games that will be coming to the PSP and the PSP Go in the rest of 2009 and 2010. This list included the likes of LittleBigPlanet, Socom, Monster Hunter, Motorstorm, Star Wars, Hannah Montana, Harry Potter and finally a new Resident Evil game that has been specifically designed for the PSP which is set for release in 2010.
The next section was simply a bit of facts about their Playstation Network and how many users they have. They also announced that later this year, they will be releasing over 50 Playstation 1 classics which include Final Fantasy 7 which is launching tonight, this got quite a few cheers from the audience. This segment ended with a quick video to show off their Playstation Home feature and see how well it’s developed since it’s releaseĀ just 6 months ago, doesn’t seem that long.
After a rather long video that showed some clips of upcoming games, they announced a new game that is being developed by Rockstar Games North, creators of the Grand Theft Auto series, called Agent which will be exclusive to the Playstation 3. Not a huge amount was actually said about this game, only that it would be based in the 1970′s.
After this came announcement of the Assassin’s Creed 2 game, which had been talked about in the Ubisoft conference. They started with a quick demo and some information about the game. You start the game at the same place that the first one ended, but this time you enter the history of a new assassin. This time the assassin is based in Italy during the renaissance period, and because of this, you will be able to benefit from powerful friends such as Leonardo Da Vinci who kindly allows you to use his famous flying machine to take a quick route around the city.
They also said that they have worked hard to give this new character lots of new assassination techniques compared to the ones used by Altair. This was followed by another new feature which makes your hiding places, ie the hay stacks, not so safe because there are guards called seekers who will search through the hay to find you, unless you kill him first.
This was closely followed by a video of the upcoming Final Fantasy 13 game which will be available on both the Playstation 3, aswell as the Xbox 360. But, after that video they also announced that the game after that, Final Fantasy 14, which is planned for release in 2010 will be a Playstation 3 exclusive game, looks like they’re only giving the Xbox a small taster.
After this they started talking about the new features that will be available on the Playstation 3. The first thing they started talking about was the Playstation Motion Controller which is similar to the tech used by the Nintendo Wii, aswell as the tech that Microsoft announced yesterday. Playstation’s attempt at the motion sensing technology uses a camera similar to the PS2 EyeToy.
They displayed a series of demos that showed the controller in action which included using guns for FPS games and a paint like feature where you can attack a piece of paper with paint or you could simply layout a row of dominos to knock down. It didn’t look hugely impressive compared to the announcements from Microsoft yesterday, but it’s still pretty good. I got the impression that the tech was more similar to the Wii technology where you use the controllers to control the movement of the games, rather than the Microsoft tech which uses no controllers to play games and navigate the dashboard.
They ended by saying that this technology will be launching in Spring 2010.
ModNation Racers was the next game to be announced. This is another game similar to LittleBigPlanet that allows you to create your own racers and race tracks, very similar to the LittleBigPlanet level creation. Just like LittleBigPlanet, you will be able to share all your race tracks that you have created or modified with other gamers around the Playstation Network.
This game reminded me a lot of Mario Kart games because the movement is very similar plus you have the ability to pick up weapons to fight your way to the front of the positions. So really I would say that this is just Mario Kart, but you get to make and share your very own tracks.
While they were on the stage they created their very own track which I must say looked very simple to create some great tracks. You can then enter the test mode to play your track as soon as you have made it, if you find you track is a bit boring, you can then enter editor mode where you can create hills, dirt tracks, dirt patches, water and even sheep. As they went further into creating their map they explained how you can customise everything from the water level to the time of day your race takes place in.
Overall it does look like a pretty impressive game, they ended by saying that the game will be released in 2010.
After this came a video for the upcoming Gran Turismo 5 game which is exclusive to the Playstation 3. The quality and gameplay looked amazing in this video whic is no surprise considering what we saw in the prologue.
Next up was God of War 3 which they say is the most anticipated game of the decade, not sure if that’s true. They started by saying that this was going to be the final segment of their game trilogy. Although I have never played any of the other God of War games, this one looks absolutely amazing, the quality of the actual game and the combat system looks like it’s going to be one of the best games to be released on the PS3 console. One thing that did seem odd to me, correct me if I’m wrong, but the majority of the enemies were some sort of skeletal warriors, which let out blood when they were ripped to shreds, seems a bit odd to me, blood from skeletons.
No release date was given for God of War, which had it’s demo cut short for some reason and with that game annoucement, it was the end of the Sony conference for this years E3. Hopefully I managed to get everything into this post which has turned out to be very long.
