The chairman of Sony Computer Entertainment, Kaz Hirai, has finally put everyone out of their misery and have announced the new Playstation 3 Slim console. Hirai said that the new console will come with everything that the current console comes with, as well as a 120GB hard drive.
This news doesn’t really come as much of a shock as there has been many rumours flying around recently regarding a and the announcement of a PS3 Slim console.
The new console will be more than 30% smaller, and more than 35% lighter than the standard current console. As for the price, the console will cost only $299 or 299 Euros, and with the current exchange rate, £250, whether that will be actual price is not known.
As for the release date, Hirai said that the console will be released in the first week in September, so only a few weeks away.
Another piece of news announced at the GamesCon event is that the current 80GB bundle will be reduced by $100, bringing it down to $299, the same price as the newely announced Playstation 3 Slim console. This move to reduce the price until the release date of the slim seems a little pointless as many people will simply hold off for the slimmer version which comes with 40GB more hard drive space for the same price.
No doubt Sony will see a much needed surge in console sales now that the price has dropped slightly and the excitement of a, sort of, new console. And all this new came before GamesCon even opened up to the public, lets hope there’s even more in store.
