Red Faction Guerrilla Review

Red Faction GuerillaWhen I first saw that there was a new Red Faction game coming out I was unsure; I found them fun but they were never really that good of a game. However, one thing that they do get right is blowing stuff up, which is basically what this game is full of.

The game begins with Alec Mason ( That’s you ) arriving on Mars to do some work and then obviously with in the first 5 minutes you see your brother get killed by those damn Earth Defence Force (EDF). So you decide to raise some hell for those EDF by joining the Red Faction Guerilla unit.

The game is set in an open world setting with several different sections. To complete each section you must start by lowering the EDF control over the area. You do this by completing side quests which involve rescuing people or blowing more stuff up. Then once you have done this, the Red Faction story missions in the sector will be yours. Some of the missions you will do are challenges, these come in two categories the first is transport missions in which you have to deliver a vehicle the quickest. Then of course there are the destruction challenges in which you have to blow up the building with a limited amount of ammo and time. For these challenges there are also pro times to beat, most of which aren’t that hard once you know what you are doing. You also get random missions that appear in which you have to defend a place or attack a convoy. These are quite annoying cause they never appear when you want, you are either trying to do another mission or have no ammo.

Now onto the game-play. This game plays like any other average game except the ability to destroy building and watch them collapse, just make sure you don’t hit the wrong wall while inside or you will crushed! The driving of this game is a bit messed up sometimes because you will hit a slight bump and your car will flip. There are also alot of hills which some trucks will struggle to drive up. Another downside would be that you can get into these vehicles called ‘Walkers’ and for some reason you don’t get a cross hair so you just swing like crazy and hope you kill people.

Now onto the graphics and audio. Overall there are not that many movie scenes actually in Red Faction, the ones that are there are nothing special, they are short and don’t really improve the games lack of a decent story.  The texture of Mars is basic with nothing but dust and mountains for miles, except for a few towns/cities that all look the same. The audio in this game is terrible with no decent soundtrack and poor voice overs.

Finally the multi-player. When I first heard about the multi-player for Red Faction I thought it could work, but it doesn’t. The maps are to0 big so you spend most of the time looking for someone to kill, once you find someone they just seen to run at you with sledge hammer so it gets boring fast.

Summary

Overall Red fraction is an average game, the one thing they did do right is the destructible scenery, the rest is average at best.

Good points = destructible scenery
Bad points = The lack of a decent story

I give this game: 7/10

  1. I got my hands on this game yesterday and thought it was brilliant! I totally agree with you when you say the best bit is the blowing up the buildings. This was exactly why I like Battlefield Bad Company because you could blow through the walls and this game takes it to a whole new level because you actually can destroy everything.

The driving is slightly strange like you said because you will hit something and will flip your car, however, I do like the control of the vehicles, they pick up speed quickly for a fast getaway and they handle corners really well.
