GamesCom has started this week in Germany. Although there has been alot of news out already, this announcement from Sony caught my eye. In Sony’s press briefing, they announced that they will be increasing their range of catch up TV channels with 6 new channels including the ITV Player for UK console owners. Currently only the BBC iPlayer is available for the Playstation 3.
This new deal, which features the ITV Player as one of 6 new channels, is the first of it’s kind because it’s a deal between Sony and a commercial broadcaster (ITV). The deal will allow gamers with an internet connection to catch up with ITV shows up to 30 days after they have been shown on television.
The big advantage of having this service is that PS3 owners will be able to watch your favourite shows after they’ve been on TV, all from your TV. Whereas the majority of people would have to watch catch up TV on their computers, unless you have an internet enabled TV that is. In terms of downsides, there aren’t that many. The service is free which is a big plus considering ITV is a commercial broadcaster, however, if ITV aren’t making their money from the viewers, how are they? Well this is the only downside. To make some money, before, after and even during sometimes, you can expect to see adverts. I suppose it doesn’t really make any difference to watching it on normal TV.
No release date has been announced for when PS3 gamers can expect to get these 6 new channels, which will appear in the same place as the current BBC iPlayer on the PS3 dashboard. However, when they do come out, you can expect a software update.
Wohooo another PS3 gadget, I never regret buying a PS3 because of this good stuff to play on
