Step aside boys, it's the girls turn.

Step aside boys, it's the girl's turn.

A study carried out in April 2008 by Nielsen Company found that around 50% of all PC gamers were actually female, came as quite a surprise. However, if you look at some individual games it wouldn’t really come as a surprise because with games such as The Sims 3, the majority of the players are women.

That aside, it now seems that these women are branching out on the console sector because a new study has been carried out by the NPD Group, a leading American marketing company, which has found that 28% of console gamers are women.

This 28% is a 5% rise on last years results which found that only 23% of console gamers and women. NPD explained that they believe this rise to have come with the rise in demand and popularity of the Nintendo Wii.

Sharon Knight, EA VP, said this during a women’s gaming conference: “You don’t embarrass yourself; you can grab it and right away start having fun. Wii games don’t require the same investment to learn and to master how to pick up and play as other consoles’ games”.

So with the amount of Wii sales on the rise and the release of popular games like Wii Fit and the upcoming Wii Sports Resort, we could see another rise in female gamers throughout this year too.

    I think it’s great that the female proportion is rising. The Wii is probably the main culprit, but let’s not forget games like Singstar, I bet this has a lot to do with it.

    NOOOO! It’s not singstar, or Wii, I despise them both. Women can enjoy shooting things just as much as men!

    @Amy

    Don’t get me wrong, I don’t actually like shoot-ems at all myself. I just think that games like this are luring female gamers into the market who wouldn’t normally look twice at a console. Obviously this isn’t true of all female gamers, but it must be a big contributing factor to the rising proportion.
