Some more news has popped up regarding the console price cuts. Back in July, it was reported that Microsoft and Sony were both planning price cuts for their consoles. Ever since then, not much has been done, although many rumours have been flying around. The biggest and most expected change to happen is that Microsoft would remove their Premium bundle from the market while also cutting some costs for the Elite bundle, and that Sony would be cutting the PS3 cost, and possible announcing a PS3 slim console.
I’ts now appeared that on Microsoft’s part, they have started to make way for the changes. Microsoft have said to gaming retailers that they will be raising the price of the current Xbox Arcade bundle by £30, making it £170. They also said that they will be removing the Xbox Arcade games that currently come with the bundle, basically not making it the arcade anymore.
This rise is laying the ground work for the removal of the 60GB hard drive Xbox 360 which is currently the middle of the range console and costs around £160. This will leave only 2 Xbox 360 bundles on the shelves and one will look particularly more appetising than the other.
Once the Premium bundle is gone, all that will be left will be the newly priced Xbox Arcade for £170, and the Xbox 360 Elite which costs a pricey £230. The main difference between these two bundles is that the Elite comes with a large 120GB hard drive, whereas the Arcade comes with no hard drive, just a little bit of internal memory.
With the rise in price for the Arcade package, many people thinking that they will buy the Arcade and then buy a separate hard drive will re-think their decision as the end of the day price difference may not be that large. The difference might also be even less as there has been some rumours regarding a price cut for the Elite package. Only time will tell if that actually happens.
So far Sony haven’t announced anything to do with their price cuts and console announcements, every time a rumour is announced, they just say they make no comment. However, with GamesCon coming up over the next week, we might hear some news there.
I personally think they should keep the Premium. It’s the one I would buy. But if they get rid of it I would proabably pay extra for the Elite so I can see from their point of view it seems like a good move.
It seems a strange marketing strategy too me. Maybe they have something else up their sleaves.
I don’t really understand what’s going on here, and as far as I can see, the Elite is the same price (If not cheaper) at all major retailers at the moment.
