After several weeks of speculation and rumors, Microsoft have finally confirmed that they are cutting the cost of their Xbox 360 Elite bundle console.
They announced today that they will be cutting the cost of the 120GB Xbox 360 Elite console by $100 so it will now be priced at $299.99. They also announced that they will be cutting the 60GB Pro bundle by $50 making it $249.99, however, this price cut will only last until stocks last because Microsoft are currently phasing out the Pro bundle, despite it being their best selling console.
Although Microsoft are cutting the Elite bundle by $100, you won’t actually save that much because they have altered the bundle ever so slightly. They will be removing the HDMI cable from the pack because they claim that very few customers actually use the cable.
All these changes will occur this Friday, August 28th. So if you’re looking to buy a Pro bundle before they sell out, hold off till Friday and save yourself $50.
These announcements have come after their competition, Sony, have cut the price of the Playstation 3 console by $100 and announced a $299 slim version of the Playstation 3. The announcements had been expected for some time and many people assumed they would have been announced at GamesCon last week, especially after Microsoft announced that they would be increasing the price of the Arcade bundle a few weeks ago.
That’s a really good marketing ploy. Drop the price and then remove stuff from the bundle.

I know you’ll disagree with this, but I don’t think this will be enough to persuade me away from the PS3. (Although project natal might just be…)
I would still expect quite a few customers would use the HDMI cable – it is still relatively after all. I’m not quite sure why other manufacturers still put red/white RCA cables in though…
