Halo 3Everyone knows that buying a video game is not cheap. At around £40 each for the standard version, plus extra for the limited edition, making games last as long as possible is very important. This is where additional content comes in, many games these days are releasing new content for you to buy and download from the various console networks. Here are just a few to be aware of it you are continuously looking at your games looking for something new.

If you are a hardcore fan of the Halo franchise but are getting slightly tired of the bog standard maps that come with the game, maybe it’s time to buy some extra Microsoft points and get your hands on some of the new map packs. There are currently 3 downloadable packs with new maps, there is the Cold Storage Map which is a single map and this one is free, then there is the Heroic Map Pack and the Legendary Map Pack which both cost 800 Microsoft Points. Both of the packs that cost 800 MS points come with some bonus Xbox Live achievements for you to get. However, if you already have these, then you’ll be pleased to know that there is a brand new pack coming out on April 9th which yet again will cost 800 MS points.

Just like Halo 3, the guys at Epic have released a bunch of new maps for the amazing Gears of War 2 game. Gears 2 has 3 available map packs, the Flashback Multiplayer Map Pack which comes with 5 new maps for a tiny 400 MS points. The following 2 packs will cost you 800 MS points each and they are the Combustible Multiplayer Map Pack which allows you to play through 3 new maps, and also the recently released Snowblind Multiplayer Map Pack.

If first person shooter games are not really your thing, then how about some extra content for the best skating game out there, Skate 2. There are 5 available download packs for Skate 2 which include things from new maps to new ways to film your moves. First there is the San Van Classic Pack which allows you to skate around 3 areas that have been taken and modified from the original Skate game. There is also a range of achievements up for grabs in each of these locations, this pack costs 800 MS points. The next one is the Drydek’s Fantasy Plaza Pack, this Skate 2pack costs 400 MS points and allows you to skate around the course for Rob Dyrdek’s Fantasy Factory show. The last few packs don’t contain any new maps, however, they do add new features and items to the game. The first one being the Filmer Pack, this costs 600 MS points and allows you to update the film feature with new angles, views and add some extra finishing touches to make your movies even better. If you fancy changing the look of your skate then this next pack is for you, it’s called the Throwback Pack and it’s free, so no reason not to get it and it basically comes with new apparel for your skater. This final pack is called the Time is Money Pack and it allows you to unlock all the gear, areas and skaters for a mere 400 MS points, mainly for the lazy gamers it seems.

Reaching the end of the post here, just a little bit more. The next game is Mirror’s Edge, so if you love to race across buildings against the clock, you should get your hands on this brand new content. It’s called the Pure Time Trials Pack and will costs you 800 MS points, and what you get for your money is 9 new time trials across 7 whole new areas, there are no cops and no guns to slow you down, just pure agility maps that push you to the limit and get you playing at your best. Once again, there are a range of new achievements available for this pack.

The last game of the post is going to be Fallout 3. This game has 2 content packs that extend the campaign and take you to new areas to fight against new enemies. Both of these packs cost 800 MS points, the first one is The Pitt, this one requires you to travel to Pittsburgh, now called The Pitt, and uncover the secret that has caused the people of The Pitt to be attacked by disease and mutation. The second pack is the Operation: Anchorage pack which takes you into the military campaign where you have to fight against Chinese Communist Invaders, but you can leave your old weapons behind as you can get your hands on some of the new gear available like the Gauss Rifle.

That’s all I’m going to inform you about at the moment, just make sure you watch the various marketplaces to get the latest content when it comes out. Also, I hope this blog post helps you get playing some of your older games.

My favourite games are mainly FPS games, Halo, Gears of War and Call of Duty are particular favourites. However, I'll play pretty much all genres of games, anything from Guitar Hero 5 to Lego Harry Potter, they're all great!

  1. The Fallout downloads are excellent. It’s such a massive game anyway, it anyway, I never thought I’d need any more content, but the downloadable content stopped me from taking this out of my Xbox 360, and that’s always a good thing for the developers. Brilliant for my wallet too.

  2. Many games barely warrant being played, nevermind additional content but yes, for those that do it is usually well worth checking them out. The halo franchise as well as many others are flagship games and must haves really and extending their life is great :D
