Is Gaming Getting More Expensive?

Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2With all the worlds economies going down the pan, you don’t really want to hear the answer to the question “Is gaming getting more expensive?” because unfortunately, it seems that it is.

We all know that prices for games like Rock Band and Guitar Hero are expensive because they come with more controllers and this has increased the price of gaming. However, what about your standard £40 game?

Although we would have all preferred the £30 price of games for the old generation of consoles like the PS2 and the Xbox, but, inevitably, a price rise came along for the next-gen consoles in the form of £10. However, is this price about to go up again?

I ask this because the upcoming Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 game has been reported to be retailing at £54.99 which is a £5 rise from the original Call of Duty Modern Warfare game which retailed for £50. You may think, we it’s only £5 and it’s only on one game, but, what happens if other game publishers look at this, see how many sales the game is inevitably going to make, and they decide to raise their prices as well.

Hopefully it won’t end up coming to that because currently it’s unknown why Activision chose to raise the RRP. It could be the weakness of the current exchange rate, or it could just be Activision trying to get some extra cash from this game by raising the price.

We’ll have to keep an eye on the market to see if any other publishers are going to try and push up the prices.

Fortunately, big UK retailers such as Play.com, Amazon and Game are still offering their £10 off which they offer with basically every game they sell, so you won’t be paying the full retail price.

My favourite games are mainly FPS games, Halo, Gears of War and Call of Duty are particular favourites. However, I'll play pretty much all genres of games, anything from Guitar Hero 5 to Lego Harry Potter, they're all great!

  1. I think the price is definitely increasing, but not only because of the games. You’ve already mentioned the controllers, but what about the HDTV to go with you PS3? The Playstation Eye? Larger hard drive? And other nice additions, but they all cost extra.

    • Yeh but like you said, “other nice additions”, so they are not really needed but something like a Guitar Hero controller is required.
