Yet another Guitar Hero game has been released this week, Guitar Hero Greatest Hits, some places are calling it Smash Hits, but it’s Greatest Hits on the box.
The different thing with this Guitar Hero game compared to all the others is that the game contains absolutely no new songs. That’s because it contains the best songs from Guitar Hero 1, Guitar Hero 2, Guitar Hero 3, Guitar Hero 80′s and finally Guitar Hero Aerosmith. And although you may be thinking, “Why are they releasing all these songs again?!”, it’s a very good idea really.
It’s good because the original Guitar Hero you cannot get on the Xbox 360 or PS3, plus many people that have bought Guitar Hero 2, won’t have it on the next-gen consoles because originally it was released onto the PS2 and then a year later onto the Xbox 360.
Not only is it good because you get the best songs from those 5 games, but I think it’s a brilliant game for beginner Guitar Hero players. I’ll explain why I think that further down in the post.
The gameplay of this new Guitar Hero game is the same as all the others because the idea of the game is the same. However, they have made some slight alterations compared to the original Guitar Hero games. The major change is that you can play all the songs with a range of instruments, guitar, bass, mic and drums. This gives you a total of 4 careers to play, 5 if you count a band career. This really extends the life of the game.
Another new thing, well, not really new to Guitar Hero, but new from the first games, and this is the ability to see how close you are to gaining a new star. We first saw this feature in Guitar Hero Metallica just over a month back and it’s a particular favorite addition of mine because you finally know throughout the song how close you are to gaining a new star, it also gives you an indication of how far through the song you are. The only annoying thing about this is if you are on four stars, almost at 5, then the song ends, you kinda kick yourself.
One big improvement that they have made to the game, which is the first time it’s been done in the Guitar Hero games, is that you don’t have to unlock songs for quick play. As soon as you put the disk in you can start playing any song on any difficulty. This is pretty great because you no longer have to complete the career to unlock all the songs, which is a relief because they have made the career longer.
When building the career they obviously learned from Guitar Hero Metallica because in that game you only had to play around 2 or 3 songs out of the 6 or 7 in the location, meaning you can complete the career in about an hour or so. In Greatest Hits, you have to get a set amount of stars which normally involves you playing 5 out of 6 songs in that set, plus to actually complete the career you have to complete every single song which includes completing Through the Fire and the Flames, making completing the career no easy task.
All the above reasons are why I think that this Guitar Hero game has to be the best for beginners because you get the latest features in the game, an awesome set list, you can play with range of instruments and finally you can play any song without completing the lengthy career.
The graphics of the game are pretty much the same as they have been since Guitar Hero World Tour. When you look closely it looks like they have made some improvements to the movement of the lips, they seem to be more in sync with the song and have more life like movements. Other than that the look of the game is the same.
Overall this is one of the best Guitar Hero games that has been released to date. The game is perfect for beginners as well as great for experienced players who have been through their fair share of music games.
Good points = Great set list, all songs unlocked, new interface features
Bad points = Very long career (could also be a good point), have to do the hardest song ever to complete the career
I would give this game a 9/10.
Thanks for the review. My nephew requested this for his graduation gift, but i wanted to read up on the reviews first. I actually prefer it if he would learn how to play the guitar or any other instrument first.
This Guitar Hero game makes a perfect birthday gift for my son who is learning to play Guitar recently. Thanks! – Mike
