A huge amount has been said about the upcoming The Beatles: Rock Band game, especially at E3 this year where there was a huge section of introduction and showing gameplay. However, how about the competition?
Guitar Hero 5 is also be released in September, only one week before the release of The Beatles game (a tactic by Activision to try and get more sales of their game over Rock Band). It appears to me that not a huge amount has been said about the great new features that we will see in Guitar Hero 5.
There are a couple of massive new features in Guitar Hero 5 that we have never seen before in any previous music games. The first one is Party Play Mode. This is a new mode that allows any players to jump in and out of a song without pausing the song for the rest of the band, so, if you get bored of the song, just pop up the personal menu and jump out.
The next one is that you can now play with any combination of instruments. You can play with up to 4 guitars at one time so if no one wants to be bass, no need to flip a coin, just both go guitar. This is a pretty big feature for the game because we have never seen it before, the closest we have gotten is in the new The Beatles: Rock Band game which allows up to 3 singers.
Another new feature now, but this time, it’s only for Wii players. There is a new feature called Mii Freestyle that allows you to create your own songs and then record yourself playing them with your Wii Mii.
As well as all these features, there are also a number of new online games. The online mode is called Rockfest and it allows you to play locally or online against up to 8 other players to see who comes out on top. Some of the games you can play within Rockfest are Do-or-Die, Perfectionist (Possibly person to get most percentage wins?), Elimination (Play a series of songs with the lowest score being eliminated at the end of each song maybe?) and Streakers.
Activision haven’t just made changes to the game, they have made changes to the instrument controllers aswell. In particular the wireless guitar. The new guitar comes with a new faceplate, which I must looks pretty awesome, as well as some improved technology. They have changed the neck slider from analog tech to digial so now apparently it’s 100% accurate, which is great news. They have also improved the durability of the strum, resigned the whammy bar, and finally they have changed the tuner nobs to fake chrome rather than plastic.
As for the set list of the game, it contains 85 songs, a huge amount, from 83 different artists. Some of which are: AFI, Artic Monkeys, Blink 182, Bon Jovi, Coldplay, Deep Purple, Elton John, Gorillaz, Iron Maiden, Kaiser Chiefs, Kings of Leon, Musa, Nirvana, Rammstein, Rush, Santana, Smashing Pumpkins, T. Rex, The Killers, The Rolling Stones, The White Stripes, Thin Lizzy, Weezer and Children of Bodom. Those are just a few of the 83 artists that have songs in the new game, and by the sound of that list, it’s going to be a pretty amazing game.
It appears that many music game lovers won’t have much of a tough decision to make if they don’t like The Beatles. Even if you were a fan, it would be a pretty tough decision which game to buy because the artist line up in Guitar Hero 5 is amazing.
