Gears of War 2 Review

Overall, I think Gears of War 2 is an amazing game and has to be one of the best shooters on the Xbox 360. When you start this new game you are thrown straight into the action with your buddies Dom, Baird and Cole in another attempt at defeating the vile Locust.

Gears of War 2As you fight your way through group after group of Locust throughout the game, you can see some of the great new features that they have built in. The first new things you see would have to be the new weapons, one being the great shield, you can move behind this without being hit or blown up, you can then dig it into the group for a bit more protection. Another great new weapon is the flamethrower, this great toy can take out wretches very well.

Another great new feature of the game is the ability to use knocked down enemies as shields, this can come in hand when you need some cover in a hot situation.

And finally, the last feature I’m writing about is the chainsaw duels. You can lock blades with enemies that are wielding lancers and have a button smashing battle to see who can press B fastest, and the person who is just a little slow, gets a sticky ending.

Overall, the whole look of the game is brilliant, I thought the detail and graphics of the characters was the greatest improvement but really the whole environment and enemies have had a face lift. Even though the loading screen blockyness won’t wow you when you get the game, once your inside, you’ll be amazed.

And finally onto the multiplayer; I never really played alot of Gears of War 1 multiplayer as I thought it never really competed against the likes of Halo 3, and to be honest, it’s still not the best. I know it’s meant to be tactical and using cover to stay alive, but they really should have a run in guns blazing match with more than 5 players per side. Although the Gears of War 2 multiplayer is an improvement to the first one, and it’s definitely worth a try, I don’t believe it can compete with the likes of Call of Duty 4 and Halo 3 multiplayer.

All said, this game is an amazing sequel to the original game and is definately in my top 10 Xbox 360 games, plus with the possibility of a Gears 3 (guessing from the ending), I hope that we’ll see even better things coming from the guys at Epic.

My favourite games are mainly FPS games, Halo, Gears of War and Call of Duty are particular favourites. However, I'll play pretty much all genres of games, anything from Guitar Hero 5 to Lego Harry Potter, they're all great!

  1. Great review. My favorite part of the game is of course, the chain saws. I play GoW for the single player action so the lackluster multiplayer doesn’t really bother me, though I agree it would be way better with a run n gun style.
