I never actually intended to get this game, but I came across it because when I went down to Blockbusters to give Forza 2 a go, which they didn’t have, I ended up getting Fuel.
The entire game is very similar to the likes of Motorstorm which is exclusive to the Playstation 3. You take part in mainly off road and dirt track courses, using a series of different vehicles including bikes, quad bikes, SUVs and trucks. For each race you can choose from 3 different difficulties which when you complete the race, gives you 1 to 3 stars based on the difficulty.
The easiest difficulty is really only as a practice really because as you only get 1 star for completing the race, you won’t have enough stars to move onto the next race zone. Speaking of the zones, I’ll run through the idea of the game. The idea is that you are in the future America where global warming has had an effect on the land, this has caused the entire population to move towards the cities, leaving thousands of kilometres of land empty. Out of all of that empty space, the game allows you to roam around the 14,000 kilometre world, however, you can’t do that straight away.
The world is split up into 19 different sections all different sizes, and you have to complete races in each of those locations to be able to move onto the next location. Within those 19 different sections there are 70 career races for you to take part in while using one of 75 different vehicles that are available for you, at a price.
Aswell as a large campaign to complete, there are also 190 different race challenges for you to complete to gain you extra currency, fuel. There is also a race creator tool which allows you to plot checkpoints on your map to layout a race which you can then share over Xbox Live.
Unfortunately, although this may all sound good, it’s not a great game. Although you will get several hours of gameplay out of the campaign, aswell as some extra hours online, just after a few hours playing, it got slightly repetitive and boring.
One plus to this game is the graphics, although it has very little effect on the actual gameplay, it does make the game look nice while you’re bored. I particularly like the way the weather and the time of day changes which affects the lighting, also, the way that your vehicle leaves tracks across the sand, very realistic I thought.
I was slightly disappointed when I got the game because it was made by Codemasters who also have made some great racing games like GRID, Dirt and the upcoming Dirt 2. I guess I can only hope that Dirt 2 will not be like Fuel.
Looking at the screenshot there, the graphics look superb. But if, as you say, the gameplay is not up to scratch then the graphics are wasted. Gameplay being obviously the most important element.
