Valve is preparing this week to release yet another update for the popular FPS game, Left 4 Dead. If you didn’t know about it, Valve released a Left 4 Dead SDK beta which allowed gamers to create their own custom made campaigns and versus maps. This SDK release came out several weeks ago which has given gamers plenty of time to create their own great new maps.
The time has come now where Valve is bringing these custom made maps to us.
This new update from Valve will bring support for new custom made community maps and campaigns, a new matchmaking system, which I will be very happy to see, where you will be able to search for other lobbies that are playing on the same custom built map. The update also includes support for new models, textures and finally a complete SDK release which will allows gamers to continue making their own maps to share over the internet.
Valve has also simplified the way you install a new map. Rather than having to install the map, add the models and textures all seperately into the folders on your computer, it’s now possible to install all of those bits by clicking on a single file which will download and install it all for you all from the Left 4 Dead menu screen. However, if you love to do things yourself and you want to know where all your files go, you will still be able to install the games yourself by using the new ‘Addons’ folder which will be included into the update.
This new content created by the community will certainly keep the game fresh while we wait for the release of Left 4 Dead 2 in November. The release date for this update is expected to be this week so keep an eye on Steam throughout the week.
This a great way of lengthening the lifespan of a game, by allowing users this kind of control. I’ll look forward to it’s release.
