This is part 2 of the Chronicles of Riddick Assault on Dark Athena review because I posted previously about the remastered original game that comes as a freebie with the new game.
Just like Butcher Bay, Assault on Dark Athena begins with a strange sort of level which is basically a training level but it doesn’t say it is, you simply wake up in some sort of sleep freezer once you reach a certain checkpoint, basically the same as Butcher Bay.
Once past this little training level, you soon get straight into the action and have to sneak around The Athena ship to discover who you are up against and what’s happening on the ship, and this really isn’t as easy as you would think. Throughout the ship there are several Drones which are basically a mix between human and robot which can be controlled by another human from a remote location. You’ll be glad to hear that you don’t have to fight these things with your bare fists, as you go through the game you quickly get your new primary melee weapons, the Ulaks aswell as a range of clubs, knifes and a lovely tranq gun which works in the same way it does in Butcher Bay.
I guess the storyline and idea of the game is the same as Butcher Bay really, somebody trying to capture you and get the reward that’s planted on your head, but you won’t go down without a fight, so you have to find an escape route off the ship, unfortunately, like in Butcher Bay, there are some awkward people that will only help you once you do something for you, so you can end up going backwards and forwards collecting items and killing people to get the support of other Athena prisoners.
As for the graphics of the game, I was hoping that they would have been slightly improved from the Butcher Bay remastered game but unfortunately they are not so some of the images are slightly poor quality and the mouth movements are not quite in sync with the voices at some points. There are also some buggy bits on the game, when you kill the drones their bodies and arms can go a bit buggy and ping about if they are stuck on an object.
Overall the game is good, very similar to the original game. If you haven’t played the first one, I recommend that you buy the Assault on Dark Athena game as you do get both games from the price of one. One final note about the game is that it contains a new multiplayer feature, haven’t tried it yet, but it could turn out to be good as you will have to be aware of both people with guns, and people in the shadows with the deadly Ulaks.
