A new special Battlefield game has been released, Battlefield 1943. What makes this game special is because it’s a 100% downloadable game. All you have to do is pay for it online using either Microsoft points or real money depending on which console you’re using, and then the game is yours.
Because this is a downloadable game, DICE wanted to reduce the size of the game, so it’s multi-player only. This means for Xbox 360 players, you will have to have a Gold account to be able to play the game.
You might be thinking that if this game is only available via download, surely the quality is reduced? No need to fear though, even though it’s via download, you still get the quality that comes with a Battlefield game.
What you have to do in the game is pretty simple. You can have a quick match where you enter onto one of 4 maps and you are given a side to fight as, either America or Japan. For both of those nations, you then choose a class, Infantry, Rifleman and Scout. Each one gets different weapons, for example, a Scout has a sniper rifle and a pistol whereas a rifleman has a rifle and a grenade launcher.
Once you have chosen your class you then have to fight against your enemy while trying to capture 5 points around the map. Once either nation has captured all 5 points, they are the winner.
To help you fight your enemy, as well as your weapons, you also have a range of vehicles available. There is a standard jeep that can carry soldiers and has a mounted gun on the top. There are also a couple of different tanks, a light tank and a heavy tank, the heavy tank fire slower and stronger hits. Finally there is the plane, now these are quite difficult to control as you do get a restricted view, however, after some practice you should have no trouble cruising the skies. There are a number of tutorials within the game to help you practice your flying.
I did say that there are 4 maps to this game, however, only 3 of those maps are available when you first get the game. Unlocking the 4th map is a bit of a competition between the 2 console networks, Playstation and Xbox. To unlock the map the network has to reach a combined score of 43 million kills so although both networks will get the map no matter who comes first, there’s still competition between the two. At the point of writing this I believe that the Xbox 360 players are ahead by almost 15 million kills with a total score of around 30 million.
The graphics of the game are pretty good. Considering that this game is only available for download, plus the size of the game is only around 550MB, the graphics are better than you would expect. Obviously they’re not as good as their previous games, but that’s understandable.
Just like their recent Battlefield Bad Company game, they have stuck with the destructible environment. In Battlefield 1943 you can use a range of grenades, rocket launchers, tanks and planes to blow up the buildings and towers. This helps sometimes when an enemy runs into a house, just blow up the wall.
Overall, the game is well worth the money. For only 1200 Microsoft Points which is $14.99 or around £10, it’s definitely worth getting.
You really do feel like you’re playing a full game rather than a downloaded game because the graphics are of such a good standard and none of the normal Battlefield game abilities are forgotten.
Currently the game is only available for the Xbox 360 and Playstation 3, however, some time in September the game is becoming available for PC, not sure yet whether it will come with a fee or not.
Good Points = Cheap price, great fun, planes!
Bad Points = Reduced graphics quality (although expected)
I give this game a 8/10.
